South Korea had to start from scratch after the Korean War (1950-53). The war-torn country had nothing but human resources as the entire nation had become a battlefield and was ruined. Korean nurses and miners flew to Germany to earn cash and the income they sent to their families was used as "seed money" for the nation's industrialization.
